[힙합] 랩의 신, 라킴 (Rakim)

The Master

힙합을 듣는다면 몰라서는 안되는 아티스트들이 몇 있습니다.

그 중 하나는 제가 감히 단연 라킴(Rakim)이라 말씀드리고 싶네요.

1986년 데뷔하여 DJ인 Eric B.와 짝을 이뤄 힙합 역사에서 대표적인 DJ & MC 듀오 중 하나를 이뤘었고 지금까지도 가사의 장인으로 꼽히는 최고의 MC 중 하나입니다.

악보 한마디(bar) 낭비하는 일 없이 마디마디에 최대한 정교하게 짜여진 어휘와 운들을 퍼즐처럼 착착 맞추고, 욕설도 거의 없으며 동네 놀이터 수준의 라임이 판치던 당시 힙합의 세계에서 다음절 라임 및 라임 안에 라임을 넣는 고난이도의 기술과 비트를 피해 라임을 맞추는 변칙성, 거기에 힘들이지 않고 비단결처럼 술술 끝없이 랩을 쏟아붓는 차원이 다른 수준을 선보여 힙합의 역사에서 장르 자체의 전반적인 수준을 상향평준화 시킨 그를 설명할 수 있는 단어를 딱 하나 고르자면 단연, 마스터 (Master)

나스(Nas) 역시 어릴 때 Rakim을 보고 자라 그가 자신이 래퍼가 된 계기가 됐음을 앨범에 노래로 수록했을 정도이고 무수한 현역 랩퍼들의 가사에 레퍼런스되고 추앙을 받는 라킴이니 이 정도면 더 이상의 설명은 필요가 없을 듯 싶습니다.

제가 좋아하는 대표적인 Rakim의 노래들을 공유해봅니다. 너무 많으니 그 중에서도 고르고 골라봤습니다.

먼저 80년대로 가봅시다.

1. I Ain't No Joke (1987)

느껴지시나요? 80년대 Freshness와 뽕끼 넘치는 비트 ㅋㅋ

무려 30년 전이나 될 정도로 오래 됐지만 뱉어내는 가사는 장난이 아닙니다. 진짜 Ain't no joke입니다.

2. Paid in Full (1987)

전설적인 노래이자 가사입니다. 지금 거성이 된 힙합 스타들도 이 노래를 듣고 자랐습니다.

Thinking of a master plan. Cause ain't nothin' but sweat in my hands.

So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent. So I dig deeper but still comin' up with lint so I

thinking how could I get some dead presidents (죽은 대통령은 돈을 뜻합니다)

이 노래는 스눕독(Snoop Dogg)이 2002년 앨범 <Paid tha Cost to be da Bo$$>에서 Paper'd Up이라는 제목으로 오마주했습니다.

3. Microphone Fiend (1988)

마찬가지로 전설적인 노래. 마약 중독자가 아닌 마이크 중독자라는 컨셉입니다.

I was a fiend before I became a teen
I melted microphone instead of cones of ice cream

I get a craving like a fiend for nicotine, but I don't need a cigarette.

이 노래는 제가 너무나도 좋아하는 락 그룹, Rage Against the Machine (RATM)이 오마주 했습니다. 네, 락커들도 힙합을 듣고 자랐고 그 중에서도 특히 라킴을 듣고 많은 영향을 받았다는 증거입니다.

이들 특유의 공격성이 노래와 정말 잘 어울립니다.

90년대로 넘어가봅시다

Run DMC, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, LL Cool J 같은 아티스트들 덕분에 힙합이 대중화 되기 시작하고 어느 정도 주류 음악으로 진입하기 시작한 90년대입니다.

라킴의 1992년도 노래, Know the Ledge를 들어보시죠.

참고로 뮤직비디오 중간중간 나오는 장면들은 이 노래가 사운드트랙에 수록됐었던 1992년도에 개봉한 <Juice>라는 영화의 장면들입니다.

잘- 보시면 본격적으로 랩 커리어를 시작하기 전의 젊은 시절의 투팍(Tupac)을 볼 수 있습니다 ^-^

4. Know the Ledge (1992)

90년대라는게 믿어지지 않을 정도로 폭풍처럼 스며나오는 간지와 가차없는 랩핑

이빨에 그릴 끼고 문신하고 돈 뿌리고 욕한다고 간지나는게 아닙니다.

랩퍼는 랩만으로도 간지날 수 있음을 잘 보여주는 라킴옹!

5. Don't Sweat the Technique (1992)

90년대 누님들의 압박;; Eric B.의 비트들 중 제가 유난히 좋아하는 비트와 샘플링입니다

참고로 옛날에 브래들리 쿠퍼 주연의 <리미트리스>라는 영화를 보고 있는데 영화 중 클럽에서 이 노래가 흘러나오더군요. 얼마나 반갑던지 ㅎㅎ

이 앨범 이후로 Eric B.와 Rakim은 결별하고 Rakim은 솔로 활동을 시작합니다.

6. Guess Who's Back (1997)

랩의 힘으로 악마를 무찌릅니다.

뮤직비디오는 허접하지만 랩으로 용서.

7. When I B on tha Mic (1999)

전설과 전설이 만난 라킴 최고의 간지 트랙입니다.

DJ Premier의 비트 위에 라킴의 랩. 힙합의 세상에서 이건 게임 오버입니다.

..To my elite peeps with the murderous mystiques
I hit the streets with beats and they critique for weeks
They be like "How that kid Ra reach the peak?"
Pull out the heat and use my technique to speak
It's dangerous, sit calm and explain to kids
What part of the game this is in foreign languages
They hold Ra's events in different continents

심지어 DJ 프리미어가 스크래치해서 다음의 구절을 넣어줍니다.

2000년대로 오면

이 때부터 힙합은 대중화되다 못해 심각하게 상업화 됩니다.

1999년 마지막 스튜디오 앨범 후 긴 공백기간을 가진 라킴은 2009년에 <The Seventh Seal>이라는 앨범을 내놓는데 가사에 종교적인 색채가 강합니다.

9. VH1 힙합 명예의 전당에 추대되는 라킴을 위한 찬사(Tribute)

엄청나게 멋진 퍼포먼스입니다.

The Roots가 음악 담당, DJ는 Kid Capri,

거기에 라킴의 주요 명곡들을 탈립 콸리(Talib Kweli), The Roots의 Black Thought, the L.O.X.의 Styles P., 우탱클랜의 래퀀(Raekwon) 등 어마어마한 헤비웨이트급 래퍼들이 부릅니다. 아마 어차피 다 부르면서 자랐을거에요.

심지어는 관객석에 앉아있는 다른 모든 랩퍼들도 다 따라부릅니다 ㅋㅋ 앉아 있는 사람들 보면 관객석 자체가 힙합의 역사입니다. 잠깐 보이는 사람들만 봐도 우탱클랜의 RZA, Inspectah Deck, GZA, U-God, 비스티 보이즈(Beastie Boys), 거기에 아이스큐브 (Ice Cube)...

역시 랩퍼들이 듣고 자란 랩퍼답습니다.

Paid in Full로 시작해서,  Eric B. is President, 거기에 Microphone Fiend 비트 터져 나오면서 라킴 본인이 등장해서 불러주시고 신곡이 나오는데 역시 가사의 장인답게 꽉꽉 채워 부르네요. 죽어가는 힙합에 대한 가사가 인상적인데 여기서 뱉은 구절을 보면

Ayo we stuck in a time of drought, nothing to rhyme about

ghetto and crime, on the grind, pulling iron out

industry crying out,

who put the fire out,

real hip-hop is dying out

햐.... 클래스는 영원합니다.

그리고 이어지는 I Ain't No Joke..! 저 나이에도 단 한마디 실수 없이 완벽하게 소화합니다.

10. Ice-T가 만든 힙합 다큐영화 <Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap>에서

프리스타일 같지만 사실 그의 1997년 앨범의 18th Letter에서의 구절입니다.

...while you hit trees and coast I spit flows that be ferocious
And with these explosives, I split seas for Moses
Shine permanently only my mind's concernin me
Fire burns in me eternally time's eternity
Followers turn on me they'll be in a mental infirmary
Determinely advance technology better than Germany

11. 라킴 만나서 신난 DMX

DMX도 힙합의 한 획을 그은 스타였는데 어릴 때 우상을 만나면 팬으로 변합니다 ㅋㅋ

신나서 1:17부터 Microphone Fiend를 부르는데 그 모습은 정말 fan boy 그 자체네요.

12. DJ Premier - Classic

DJ Premier, Nas, Rakim, KRS-One. 거장들만의 쇼입니다. 원래 짜증나게 Kanye West가 안 어울리게 껴 있었는데 유튜브를 찾아보니 누가 비슷한 생각을 했는지 Kanye를 잘라낸 버전을 만들었네요 ㅋㅋㅋ

도입부를 보면 실제로 옛날에 비트를 어떻게 샘플링 했는지 DJ Premier가 보여줍니다. 말 그대로 클래식입니다.

다 정말 멋집니다

비트 끊길 때 뱉는 구절이 'classic'에 대한 정의인데 겁나 멋있습니다.

13. 드렁큰타이거 - Monster 영어버전에 피처링 된 라킴

다들 잘 아는 노래일겁니다.

영어버전이 앨범에 수록되어 있는데 여기에 피처링된 아티스트가 무려 라킴입니다.

Dilated Peoples의 Rakka가 첫소절을 시작하는 것도 놀라운데 라킴의 등장으로 엄청난 무게가 실립니다.

그리고 짧지만 윤미래의 수준이 어느 정도인지도 엿볼 수 있는 트랙입니다 (2:50)

한소절 읊어주시는 라킴은 Tiger JK가 우탱클랜의 ODB 오마주를 한 직후 4:47부터..!

라킴께서 트랙 진입 전 "Drunken Tiger, this is New York to the ROK" 라고 하는 순간 전율이..

한국 랩에 참여해서 그런지 가사도 신경써서 한국을 고려한 흔적이 보입니다.
